St. Patrick's Day Parade Cover

Item 03-14-92

$1.00

The 10th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Syracuse, NY was held on March 14, 1992.  Syracuse’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade dates back to the 1850s when the procession consisted of Irish men parading their pride for their homeland.  For at least 50 years, there was no parade in Syracuse.  But in 1983, the tradition was revived.  Since then the parade has grown in size, quality and popularity.

The Syracuse Stamp Club, in conjunction with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and the Syracuse Post Office, celebrated the event with a special pictorial, commemorative cancel and cacheted cover.  The covers bear one of the following U.S. stamps: actor John McCormack, filmmaker D.W. Griffith, architect James Hoban and entertainer George M. Cohan.  All four men are of Irish heritage.  The traffic light shown is known an the only one in the country in which the green light is on top and is located on Tipperary Hill in Syracuse, NY.  This traffic light was featured on the cover celebrating the 1991 St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
